Mid Autumn Festival – Make your own Mooncake 2024

It's 2024 Mid Autumn Festival, and it's GPWCAA first Mid Autumn Festival Celebration.

The first Mid-Autumn Festival celebration of the Greater Port Washington Chinese American Association was successfully held on September 22nd. Celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival brings people together. Chinese families living of Port Washington gathered together to celebrate this traditional festival by making their own mooncakes.

In addition to making mooncakes by yourself, our volunteers also prepared hand-made origami activities for children and a story session  for telling   Mid-Autumn stories.

Make your own snow skin mooncakes. Almost every friend who came to participate in the activity made their own mooncakes. Various colors, different fillings, various shapes, various patterns.

The snow skin of mooncakes is made by mixing glutinous rice flour, sticky rice flour, orange flour, milk, sucrose, vegetable oil and other raw materials, and steaming it at high temperature.

Adding food coloring makes the snow skin appear in different colors.

Wrap the filling into the snow skin, knead it into a ball shape, then place it into the mold, and a snow skin mooncake is completed.

Children’s origami also brings different fun to adults and children. Here you can make rabbits of different shapes. Is this the Jade Rabbit in Guanghan Palace?

The story-telling session brought to everyone the wonderful legend of Hou Yi shooting the sun and Chang’e flying to the moon. This story has been passed down from generation to generation and formed the traditional culture of the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Volunteers: Vivian, Helen Zhu, Shiny Qin, Kimberly Li, Mary Ng Chan, Teddi Fan, Jessie Zhang, Rong Zhu, Grace Cui, Tina D, Allison Chao, Damien Chao, Melinda Shirley Shi.
