On the afternoon of January 26, 2025, the Greater Port Washington Chinese American Association (GPWCAA) hosted its first-ever Chinese New Year Gala at the Jeanne Rimsky Theater in Port Washington. The event attracted a large and diverse audience, including many members of the Chinese community and residents from other cultural backgrounds, who gathered to celebrate the arrival of the Lunar New Year. Notably, the theater was filled to its capacity of 400+ seats, showcasing the event’s remarkable popularity and high level of public interest.
Honored guests at the event included Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, Nassau County Treasurer David Chiang, Deputy Director at Nassau County Office of Asian Affairs Meng Li, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Town of North Hempstead Council women Mariann Dalimonte and Christine Liu, who attended to show their support and admiration for the gala. They praised the event for not only promoting the beauty of Chinese culture but also fostering dialogue and connection among diverse communities.
This year’s Lunar New Year gala brought the community together for an unforgettable evening filled with vibrant performances and cultural celebration. Featuring a diverse lineup of acts—including singing and dancing, Chinese and Western instrumental performances, stand-up comedy, poetry recitations, and traditional Kunqu opera—the event highlighted the richness and diversity of Chinese culture.
What set this gala apart was its strong community-driven spirit. Most of the performances were delivered by local residents, and the entire event, from planning to production, was organized by dedicated volunteers. The evening received strong support from the Ru Dance Studio, Evergreen Inspiration and Music Colab School, while professional performances from Crazy Laugh Comedy Club, the New York Chinese Opera Society, and rising young dancer Li Kaidi added an extra layer of excellence. The event not only showcased outstanding talent but also underscored the community’s cohesion and enthusiasm.
The gala opened with an electrifying performance of Gong Xi, blending traditional Chinese music and costumes with the dynamic energy of Latin dance, instantly captivating the audience. A folk music medley featuring Jasmine Flower and The Butterfly Lovers demonstrated the elegance of classical Chinese melodies, while a string sonata by students from The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division transported attendees into the world of Western classical music. Dance performances Cai Wei and Moonlit Lotus Pond showcased a mesmerizing mix of grace and vitality, while the grand finale, a high-energy Latin dance, brought the house down with thunderous applause.
Adding to the excitement, a series of lucky draw giveaways kept the audience engaged throughout the evening, contributing to the lively and festive atmosphere. The overwhelming response from attendees underscored the event’s success in not only providing a platform for local talent but also fostering a deeper appreciation for Chinese culture within the broader community.
The GPWCAA announced its plans to make the Chinese New Year Gala an annual tradition in Port Washington while continuing to provide more enriching events in the future to promote cultural exchange and strengthen community unity.
